The memorial was built by Shawn Carpenter, with the design concept inspired by Kevin Kampwerth's family — wife LuAlice, daughter Whitney and son-in-law John.
LuAlice Kampwerth said the idea came from a Love Lock structure the family saw near Fremont Street in Las Vegas.
About 10 years ago, Kevin and LuAlice Kampweth of Carlyle placed a lock on that Las Vegas structure, an experience that stayed with them and eventually inspired the idea of creating something similar at the Clinton County Fairgrounds.
Following Kevin Kamp-werth's passing in 2024, memorial gifts made in his honor were donated to the Clinton County Fair.
Kevin was a longtime member of the Clinton County Fair Board, and his family wanted to create something meaningful that would continue to grow over time.
Rather than a traditional memorial, the family envisioned an "interactive display" that would evolve as more people became part of it, and the heart-shaped Love Lock Memorial was the perfect fit.
Visitors are invited to attach a lock in memory of someone who has passed away, to commemorate a milestone birthday, anniversary or other special occasion, or simply to celebrate their family by adding a lock engraved with a family name.
The Kampwerth family and Clinton County Fair Board encourage everyone to add to the heart over the coming years. Their hope is that one day the memorial will be completely covered with locks, creating a visual symbol of love, remembrance and community — and that another heart can be built to continue the tradition.
