PHOTO BY MATT WILSON    The Mater Dei Knights golf squad is state bound after winning the Class 2A Althoff Regional crown on Wednesday and then claiming second place at the Quincy Notre Dame Sectional on Monday.
    The Knights will take to Normal, Illinois on Friday and Saturday to play at Weibring Golf Club
    Class 2A Quincy Notre Dame Sectional:  The host Raiders took the title at Spring Lake in Quincy on Monday afternoon.

PHOTO BY MATT SCHUCKMAN    QND took the title with 299 shots while Mater Dei advanced to the State meet with 312 strokes while Althoff also punched their ticket with a 319.
    MD senior Will Kampwerth paced the Knights with a seventh-place effort with a 75.  He had birdies on holes 13 and 14.  Junior Maddox Rakers was in 15th place with a 78 with birdies on holes six, 12 and 14.
    Mater Dei got a 15th-place effort from senior Bryce Toennies with a 78 and a 26th-place finish from junior Cooper Klay with an 81.  Bennett Moss carded an 82 and Zander Rutz shot an 84.
    Central junior Griffen Korte ended his season with a 66th-place effort with an 89.  He had a birdie on the par-four 13th hole to go with six pars.
    Class 2A Regional at Far Oaks:  Mater Dei won its third regional title in the last four years. After losing to Althoff by two strokes in last  year's regional at Far Oaks, the Knights won the regional on Wednesday, Sept. 30, with a 293 team score. Althoff was second with a 301 team score and Columbia was third with a 312 team score.
    "It feels good to win this regional," senior Will Kampwerth said. "The team has been playing really good lately. We have had some strong finishes these past couple of tournaments so it feels good to get this team win."

    Kampwerth was medalist with a 2-under-par70. He had a 3-under-par 33 with four birdies and four pars on the front nine. He birdied the par-5, No. 1 hole; par-3, No. 2 hole; par-4, No. 5 hole; and the par-5, No. 9 hole. 
    Kampwerth continued his strong play on the back nine with two birdies and four pars on the first six holes to get to 5-under-par. He birdied the par-4, No. 12 hole and the par-3, No. 13 hole. Kampwerth bogeyed the last three holes.
    "From tee to green, I was good today, and I finally made some putts today," Kampwerth said. "Everything was pretty good today."
    Kampwerth has been a regional medalist two times in his prep career. He won the Class A Regional at Carlyle his sophomore year. Kampwerth also tied for fourth place individually during the Class A Regional at Pinckneyville his freshman year and tied for fifth individually during last year's regional.
    Mater Dei junior Maddox Rakers tied for fourth individually with an even-par 72. Rakers had three birdies and four pars to finish with a 1-under-par 35 on the front nine. He birdied the par-5, No. 1 hole; par-5, No. 3 hole; and the par-5, No. 9 hole. He pared the first eight back nine holes before bogeying No. 18 to finish with a 1-over-par 37 on the back nine.
    Senior Bryce Toennies tied for sixth with a 2-over-par 74. He had a 2-under-par 34 on the front nine with birdies on the par-5, No.1  hole; par-3, No. 6 hole; par-4, No. 7 hole; and the par-5, No. 9 hole. He had a 4-over-par 40 and five pars on the back nine.
    Playing in the No. 6 position, sophomore Zander Rutz was 12th with a 77. He had five pars for a 40 on the front nine and five pars and two birdies for a 1-over-par 37 on the back nine. Rutz birdied the par-4, No. 12 hole and the par-5, No. 14 hole.
    Senior Bennett Moss tied for 18th with an 80. He had an even-par 36 on the front nine with birdies on the par-5, No. 3 hole and the par-3, No. 6 hole. He had five pars on the back nine.
    Junior Cooper Klay tied for 22nd with an 81. Klay had a 1-over-par 37 on the front nine with a birdie on the par-5, No. 9 hole. He had seven pars on the back nine.
    Central placed seventh as a team with a 329.
    Junior Griffen Korte qualified for the sectional as an individual after tying for 13th place with a 78. Korte had a 3-over-par 39 on the front nine that included a birdie on the par-5, No. 1 hole. He had a 3-over-par 39 on the back nine with a birdie on the par-4, No. 10 hole. He had four pars on the front nine and four pars on the back nine.
    With the individual sectional cutoff being an 81 score, Central junior Brant Horstmann tied for 26th with an 83. He had a 3-over-par 39 on the front nine with birdies on the par-5, No. 1 hole and the par-5, No. 9 hole. He had three pars on the back nine.
    Senior Jack Gerstner and junior Jake Zurliene tied for 29th with 84. Zurline birdied the par-5, No. 1 hole and had a 40 on the front nine. He had four pars on the back nine.
    Gerstner had five pars and a 4-over-par 40 on the front nine. He had five pars on the back nine. Gerstner finished his prep career as a two-time sectional qualifier, making it to the next round his sophomore and junior seasons. 
    Junior Brenden Huston tied for 41st with an 88. He had four pars on the front nine and four pars on the back nine. He birdied the par-4, No. 12 hole. 
    Class A Regional at Timber Lakes:  Carlyle qualified for the sectional as a team after taking third place in the regional at Timber Lakes Golf Course in Staunton on Wednesday, Sept. 30. 
    Gibault Catholic won with a 316. Carlinville was second with a 318. Carlyle and Greenville both had a 326 team score. Carlyle took third place by having a better individual fifth score.
    Carlyle junior Eli Gray tied for eighth with a 79. Gray had a 1-over-par 37 on the front nine with birdies on the par-5, No. 4 hole; par-4, No. 6 hole; and the par-4, No. 8 hole. He had a 42 with four pars on the back nine.
    Senior Gannon Meyer tied for 11th with an 80. Meyer had five pars and birdied the par-4, No. 6 hole for a 38 on the front nine. He had five pars and a 42 on the back nine.
    Freshman Grayson Gansauer tied for 17th with an 82. He had a 41 on the front nine with a birdie on the par-5, No. 4 hole. He had a 41 on the back nine with four pars and a birdie on the par-5, No. 18 hole.
    Freshman Gavin Gerber tied for 24th with an 85. He had six pars on a 41 on the front nine and three pars with a 44 on the back nine.
    Senior Jax Johnson tied for 38th with an 89. He had a 2-over-par 38 on the front nine with a birdie on the par-4, No. 6 hole. 
    Wesclin was eighth as a team with a 341. 
    Wesclin senior Bryce Haar qualified for the sectional as an individual after tying for eighth place with a 79. He had an even-par 36 on the front nine with birdies on the par-5, No. 2 hole an the par-5, No. 4 hole. He had five pars and a 43 on the back nine. 
    Senior Kody Jarvis tied for 22nd with an 84. He was a stroke away from the sectional cutoff of 83. He birdied the par-5, No. 2 hole and the par-5, No. 4 hole on the front nine. He had six pars on the back nine.
    Senior Eli Yunka tied for 36th with an 88. He birdied the par-4, No. 8 hole. Senior Lucas Harriss tied for 41st with a 90.
