PHOTO BY KELLY JO ROSS    During the New Baden Village Board meeting Monday night, the board approved an ordinance for the tax levy for the village of New Baden.
The ordinance was for the village of New Baden establishing a tax levy for corporate purposes to be levied against all property subject to taxation within the village of New Baden for fiscal year, commencing May 1, 2018, and ending April 30, 2019.
Mayor Christy Picard said that this year, the overall percentage increase is 3.7 percent.
"The overall percentage increase last year was 4.47 percent and 4.9 percent the year before," she said.
Mayor Picard said that the village had to make some tough decisions for New Baden over the last four to five years.
“We were in a state from our budget that was going to put us in a deficit very quickly if we didn’t do anything about it,” she said. “Nobody wants to raise taxes but we were going to have to look at New Baden as a whole or we were going to fall short.”
She added that the state’s instability and the threat to freeze property taxes at the time was a “scary time for us and we needed to do something about it.”
“Before we were probably only levying 40 to 50 percent of what our overall costs were and we had to change that because we were in a dire situation," she said.
She added that over the last several years, they tried to cover the last two-thirds of expenses with the levy and one-third is covered through the general fund or whatever fund they can use.
"I was happy that we didn’t have to levy as much this year,” she said. "I think as we continue to look at the budget and continue to decrease the expenses we are on a good path."
In other news, the board approved the resignation of Ricky Johnson from the Planning Commission and approved an appointment of Johnson as a trustee to the village board.
Johnson fills the seat of Jerry Linthicum, who resigned last month. Johnson’s term will be served through May 2019.
The council approved a proposal to replace the west side library door from Commercial Door and Hardware Service in the amount of $3,499.
Petition packets for the April 2, 2019, consolidated election are available. Petitions can be filed Dec. 10-17.
New Baden village board meetings are held the first and third Mondays of every month at 7 p.m. at New Baden Village Hall.
