MorrowSubstance Use Prevention Specialist Tasha Morrow    Breese Public Library will welcome Tasha Morrow, a substance use prevention specialist with Hoyleton Youth and Family Services, for presentations at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 4 and 5.
The presentation, “My Generation Rx: Medication Safety Training,” will inform parents and teens about prescription and over-the-counter drugs, as well as discuss the dangers of illegal drugs.
Morrow has been in the substance use prevention field for about five years.
The “Rx Parent Class” on Aug. 4 will teach parents about the dangers of medication use in teenagers, how to talk to their child about this topic and what signs to look for in a child or teen who may be experimenting with prescription, over-the-counter or illegal drugs. Morrow also will share examples of words and phrases to use when discussing this topic with your teen.
The “Rx Teenager Class” on Aug. 5 will teach teens about the dangers of drugs if not used as directed by a physician. Morrow’s presentation will cover prescription, over-the-counter and illegal drugs; she will also teach teens how to say no and use assertiveness.
“Engaging communities through the ‘My Generation Rx: Medication Safety Training’ is crucial to helping others understand what substances besides alcohol and other drugs that exist in our kids’ world today,” Morrow said. “I believe in sharing information because knowledge is the best prevention tool we have.”
Library director Kelly Zur-liene stressed the importance of these two sessions. “As school is starting up, this is a topic that would be a good refresher for parents and students. Prevention is key.”
Zurliene is pleased the library can host these two presentations. “As a community library, it is important to open up our library to an array of resources that the public could benefit from,” she said. “This is one of those opportunities.”
The presentations are two of several activities going on at Breese Public Library. Parents and children can still register for “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten,” while adults are invited to Book Club. More activities will be scheduled this fall.
