The Mater Dei High School cross country teams ran in the Southern Illinois University-Carbondale invite on Saturday on the campus of SIUC.
    The Mater Dei boys placed third in the field of nine teams with 96 points and an average race time of 18:20 on the three-mile course.
    Marion High School was the team champion with a 33 followed by Mt. Vernon in second with 43 points.  Salem was in fourth place with 115 points and Herrin was fifth with 126 points.
    Mater Dei’s John Venhaus was the top runner for the Knights in fourth overall with a time of 16:37.  DuQuoin’s Landen Swiney was the top runner with a time of 15:50, well ahead of second place runner sophomore Trey Mygatt of Mt. Vernon who ran a 16:23.
    Jonathan Holthaus was next for Mater Dei in a time of 17:53 for a 15th-place effort.  Freshman Nolan Goebel was up next for MD with a 20th-place effort with a time of 18:03.
    Mater Dei junior Jack Shelton was in 28th place with a time of 18:47 followed by juniors Owen Huelsmann and Nolan Ritzheimer in 46th and 47th respectively with Huelsmann running a 20:18 and Ritzheimer running a 20:26.
    Senior Joe Goring ran a 21:32 for 54th place to round out the MD runners.

    The Lady Knights had a successful team effort as well when they claimed second overall with 54 points, just before team champion DuQuoin who scored 47 points.
    Carterville was third with 83 points followed by Murphysboro in fourth with 98 points and Salem in fifth place with 131 points.
    Mater Dei junior Alexis Kampwerth was the third-best runner on the day with a time of 20:00.  DuQuoin senior Olivia Phillips was the top runner with a time of 18:23 followed by Murphysboro freshman Miah Gilmore in second place with a time of 19:48.
    The second best runner for Mater Dei was the leader of a 3-pack for MD when freshman Isabella Hacker came in eighth-place with a time of 20:39, just ahead of sophomore teammate Coryn Toennies in ninth place with a time of 21:00.  MD junior Avery Rahden was right behind that duo when she crossed in 10th place with a race of 21:02.
    Mater Dei junior Julia Korte was next up for the Lady Knights with a 33rd place finish with a time of 23:59 followed by junior Kayla Zurliene in 39th with a time of 24:52.
    Mater Dei senior Martina Zinesi was the last runner to cross for MD with a time of 26:57 in 50th place.
    Both squads are back in action this Saturday at the Richland County-Olney Invitational.  They will also run in Nashville on Monday at 4:30 p.m. at Washington County Lake.
